I Will Lead You Along, A Look at the Life of Henry B. Eyring

I Will Lead You Along: The Life of Henry B. Eyring
by Robert Eaton & Henry J. Eyring
Page Count: 560

Henry B. Eyring is a prominent member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He has served for decades and his life is a beautiful example of faithfulness.  Today I'm sharing a new biography about Eyring.

I Will Lead You Along: The Life of Henry B. Eyring
by Robert Eaton & Henry J. Eyring
Page Count: 560

I included the page count on this book because it is massive! I think this is such a neat book because Henry B. Eyring has shared his personal journal entries and given a personal snapshot of his life. He has had a very interesting life! I haven't finished reading this one because my husband actually snagged it and started reading it too. It definitely has a place on any Mormon bookshelf. I think this is a wonderful reminder to all of us on the value of keeping a journal.

Summary: In 1970, Henry B. Eyring (known to all as “Hal” because his mother didn’t care for the name “Henry”) received an impression to make a daily record of his activities. Years of his journals form the backbone of this intimate biography, a candid look at his walk through life with his beloved companion, Kathy. “The journal shows how a good-but-imperfect man works each day to win divine approval,” write the authors, and this window into his past provides unforgettable insights about the man the Lord has shaped him to become. Henry B. Eyring’s professional, academic, and personal experiences all combined to make him uniquely qualified for the responsibilities that would become his. And Kathy, always at his side, matching his intellect and spirituality, has influenced him profoundly and contributed to his life mission in unmatchable ways. Their story, told largely in his own words, vividly demonstrates the power of the Lord and the example set by one who strives to follow His commands.

Giveaway! Christmas From Heaven, The True Story of The Berlin Candy Bomber and Review of Biblical Heirloom Ornaments

Tis the season for a holiday giveaway! Today I'm featuring the beautifully illustrated story of Christmas From Heaven--The True Story of the Berlin Candy Bomber.

This story is unforgettable and what makes this book special is it comes with a DVD featuring the story read by Tom Brokaw and performances by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The paintings are wonderful and I especially love the actual photographs and letters included from this period of World War II.
I read this book to my kids and let me tell you, it was really hard not to cry! What an amazing story and reminder of just how fortunate we are. I love stories like this one that help my children to be aware of all they have to be grateful for.

So read on to see how to enter to win your own hardcover copy with DVD of Christmas From Heaven.
And don't forget, there's still time to enter my other giveaway for the best novel of the year!

Christmas from Heaven is the story of the humble beginnings of what became a beacon of hope to a war-torn land, the story of Gail Halvorsen, a young pilot in the US Army Air Corps who was assigned as a cargo pilot to the Berlin Airlift, in which US forces flew much-needed supplies into a Soviet-blockaded Berlin.

As he performed his duties, Lt. Halvorsen began to notice the German children gathered by the fences of Tempelhof Air Base. Knowing that they had very little, he one day offered them some chewing gum. From that small act, an idea sprang: He would "bomb" Berlin with candy. Fashioning small parachutes, he and his crew sent them floating down as they approached the Berlin airport, wiggling the wings of their C-54 as a signal to the children that their anticipated cargo would soon arrive.

Lt. Halvorsen became known by hundreds, if not thousands, of children in Berlin as "Uncle Wiggly Wings" or "The Candy Bomber." Word soon spread, and donations of candy and other supplies poured in from sympathetic Americans. Lt. Halvorsen's small idea became a great symbol of hope not only to German children in a bombed-out city but to all those who yearned for freedom.

Famed broadcast journalist and author Tom Brokaw brings this remarkable true story to life in a stunning live performance with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, captured on the accompanying DVD. Also included in the book is a template and directions for creating your own “Candy Bomber” parachutes.

The True Story of a Muslim Who Became a Christian

Today I want to tell you about a book I'm currently reading which has made me so grateful once again that I am an American with so many freedoms! I love learning and I am finding this book to be fascinating! My Name Used to be Muhammad is the true story of Tito Momen--a Muslim who became a Christian. Jeff Benedict has given life to his words in this tale of religious fanaticism from one side of the spectrum and how lives change when a person is given the freedom to choose.

Do you know very much about the religious culture of Islam? I didn't. I've often wondered about the Quran and the belief system that many terrorists have used as an excuse for violence. I appreciate Tito's story because he shares that there are many good people who believe and practice Islam--it is only those, like his father who take things to complete extremes who do damage. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world that kind of religious fanaticism leading to violence and abuse is the law and anyone who tries to move away from it, like Tito, is punished, jailed, even executed. This story is one of hope and a sharing of a great faith which I admire greatly.

I applaud Benedict and Momen for sharing this story and hope that you might enjoy reading it too.

Let me introduce you to this book: My Name Used to be Muhammad

Tito Momen was raised Muhammad Momen. He was born in Nigeria and was taught to observe the strict teachings of Islam. At age five he woke at 4:45 every morning to attend the mosque and perform dawn prayer with the other men in his village. Training to memorize the Qur’an began at age six. It was at this same age that he began copying the entire Qur’an word for word. He was being raised to emerge as a leader among clerics, capable of leading a jihad, or holy struggle, to convert nonbelievers to Islam. However, Tito’s path took an unexpected turn when he was introduced to Christianity. His decision to believe in Jesus Christ cost him his family and his freedom. Tito thought he would spend his remaining days enduring a life sentence in an uncivilized Egyptian prison. For fifteen years he suffered and waited and prayed. Tito said, “I never gave up hope. I never stopped believing.” Although he was falsely imprisoned, beaten, and ridiculed, Tito’s remarkable true story is one of faith, forgiveness, and testimony that God does hear and answer prayers.

Another Superb Book, Ruby's Secret by Heather Moore

I'm a fan of Heather Moore's books and novellas. I've read almost all of them and appreciate her writing style more with each story I've read. She has been busy lately! You should definitely check out her blog to see all the fantastic reads she has available http://mywriterslair.blogspot.com/

Ruby's Secret is part of a fantastic collection of stories in the Newport Ladies Book Club. Visit this page to see how four stellar authors worked together to weave the tales of the women in this book club. http://mywriterslair.blogspot.com/p/the-newport-ladies-book-club-series.html

Blurb for Ruby's Secret:
At age sixty-two, life is finally beginning for newly widowed Ruby Crenshaw. Her son is grown and gone, and after long years spent in the role of loyal wife to her charming but unfaithful husband, she’s ready to live the life she’s always dreamed of. Her resolve is firm: she’ll never make the mistake of giving her heart to another man.
The first step in Ruby’s quest for a carefree lifestyle was to create the Newport Ladies Book Club, an unlikely gathering of women who have been her haven. Now she’s ready to take her newfound independence a step further—along with her friends from the local senior center, Ruby is jetting off on a much-needed Greece adventure. What she isn’t prepared for is Gabriel—the group’s tour guide—a native Greek and a true gentleman. His unquestionable charm is hard to resist. But resist she must—because no matter their growing attraction, Ruby is not about to fall for charming again!

My thoughts: I think that I need to visit Greece someday. I really enjoyed this story. There was so much emotion in Ruby's secret, in the life she's lived and the choices she has to make. It was interesting for me to read this novel from an older woman's perspective. Heather did a great job of infusing her character with a realistic voice and true passions for the circumstances. I also loved how the books the club read were an integral  part of the plot and worked so well with the storyline. I finally pushed order on my wish list for this particular book, The War of Art by Steven Pressfield, which is one of the books read by the Newport Ladies Book Club.

Also available at Deseret Book http://deseretbook.com/Newport-Ladies-Book-Club-Rubys-Secret-Heather-B-Moore/i/5117331

I received a review copy of this book which in no way influences my honest opinions.

Gratititude Giveaway, Win a Free Copy of The Rent Collector by Camron Wright

I am thrilled to show my gratitude to my blog readers today by offering an incredible book for one lucky reader! The Rent Collector by Camron Wright is an award-winning novel that I'm sure readers from all walks of life will enjoy.

I loved this book! Amazing storyline, characters that I feel I know, heart-wrenching anguish as well as joy in simple things--these are all feelings I experienced while reading The Rent Collector. I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE. Sang Ly's story is an incredible gift that will open your eyes and help you see just how much one person can change the world. It was so neat to witness Sang Ly learning to read and how that changed everything for her and her family. Being able to peek into a part of the world so foreign to my imagination is something that I feel has enriched my life and broadened my perspective yet a little more.

Here's a blurb for the book:
Survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly is a daily battle at Stung Meanchey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. They make their living scavenging recyclables from the trash. Life would be hard enough without the worry for their chronically ill child, Nisay, and the added expense of medicines that are not working. Just when things seem worst, Sang Ly learns a secret about the ill-tempered rent collector who comes demanding money--a secret that sets in motion a tide that will change the life of everyone it sweeps past. The Rent Collector is a story of hope, of one womans journey to save her son and another womans chance at redemption. It demonstrates that even in a dump in Cambodia--perhaps especially in a dump in Cambodia--everyone deserves a second chance.

Pefect Gift for Christmas, Follow Me to Zion stories from the Willie Handcart Pioneers

Today I'm reviewing a beautiful work of art and history blended together in the new book, FOLLOW ME TO ZION by Andrew D. Olsen and Jolene S. Allphin with gorgeous paintings by Julie Rogers. If you appreciate the history of the pioneers, you'll enjoy this book with stories specific to the trek that Mormon immigrants made on their way to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1856.

The presentation of this book is incredible. I love the layout and the many pages of artwork included that bring the stories to life. I'm forever grateful for the sacrifices that my ancestors made to create this beautiful valley in which I now live today.

If you need a perfect gift idea for Christmas, read on for more details.

James G. Willie knew the trek would be arduous when he left Iowa City in July 1856, leading 500 handcart pioneers on a 1,300-mile journey across the plains.

But he could not have known that his people would run out of food while still hundreds of miles from Salt Lake City nor that the winter of 1856 would begin in the middle of October with prolonged, severe storms. Sixty-nine members of his company would die along the way. Yet from this tragedy emerged triumphant stories of personal endurance, courage, heroism, and unwavering faith.

Follow Me to Zion recounts 20 compelling stories of members of the Willie handcart company and their rescuers. Dozens of full-color images by artist Julie Rogers enrich this keepsake volume, which pays tribute to the men, women, and children who have become enduring witnesses of the power of faith and sacrifice.

Here you will find excerpts from their own accounts of the journey, learn what those faithful pioneers did after reaching the Salt Lake Valley, and read reflections on their lives by descendants.
The simple words “Follow Me to Zion,” cross-stitched onto small pieces of fabric kept in the journal of a handcart pioneer, are an invitation that still calls to us today.

The stories and paintings in this beautiful volume can inspire us to live true to our faith and reach out to help others do likewise.
Find it at Deseret Book:

We read through the book and pinpointed the exercise tips and eating principles that would be most beneficial to each of our specific body types. We've already overhauled our diet in the last six months, but this book cemented the changes that were in progress and gave us that extra motivation to stay on the healthy course to heal our body. Sky Jumpers by Peggy Eddleman, My Review

I have been looking forward to this book for a long time! Peggy Eddleman has an inspiring story and this book has been in the wings for quite some time and it has finally been released and is receiving praise all over. I'm currently reading Sky Jumpers and I can tell you that Peggy's writing is crisp, full of strong voice--I love Hope's character--and you won't be able to put it down once you start. Seriously, when I got my book, I was going to read just the first chapter and the next thing I knew I was on chapter 5.
I can't wait to read this book to my girls. It is a middle-grade reader, perfect for their ages (8 & 10 yrs) and I know they'll love it.
I also love the setting that Peggy has created. Sky Jumpers is set in the future in a dystopian society after WWIII. The book includes a map of the unique circular layout of the town of White Rock and there are so many things that will draw readers in about this little place surrounded by the bomb's breath.
If you're looking for a great read and you need a suggestion for that perfect Christmas gift to give to your readers age 8-14, get a copy of Sky Jumpers!

Here's more about Sky Jumpers:
Twelve-year-old Hope lives in White Rock, a town struggling to recover from the green bombs of World War III. The bombs destroyed almost everything that came before, so the skill that matters most in White Rock—sometimes it feels like the only thing that matters—is the ability to invent so that the world can regain some of what it’s lost.
But Hope is terrible at inventing and would much rather sneak off to cliff dive into the Bomb’s Breath— the deadly band of air that covers the crater the town lives in— than fail at yet another invention.
When bandits discover that White Rock has invented priceless antibiotics, they invade. The town must choose whether to hand over the medicine and die from disease in the coming months or to die fighting the bandits now. Hope and her friends, Aaren and Brock, might be the only ones who can escape through the Bomb’s Breath and make the dangerous trek over the snow-covered mountain to get help. Inventing won’t help them, but the daring and risk-taking that usually gets Hope into trouble might just save them all.
Praise for Sky Jumpers:
“Adventure and wonder permeate this tale, making it a fun, quick read. Eddleman brings a strong sense of atmosphere, and the underlying message—that it’s possible to contribute in unexpected ways—is a positive one.”
-Publishers Weekly

“In a world where everything we know must be reinvented, twelve-year-old Hope and her best friends Aaron and Brock are faced with the challenge of defending their home and protecting their future. A post-apocalyptic adventure young readers will love.”
-Marianne Malone, author of The Sixty Eight Rooms Adventures

Peggy had a really fun website and blog. You should check it out http://peggyeddleman.com/pe/

I received an ARC of this book and was thrilled to give my honest opinion to my readers. Thanks!

52 Life-Changing Questions from the Book of Mormon, Review

Today's post focuses on an important area of my life, my religion. Most of you know that I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. As such, I read a lot of books about the gospel, many of which I feel that anyone who desires a greater understanding of Jesus Christ, the Bible, and other gospel principles would enjoy. Today's book is specific to those who have a desire to study The Book of Mormon. I have young children, but we have already been reading the Bible and The Book of Mormon together. I wanted to review this book because I figured it would help enhance our scripture study. I'm happy to say that it has done just that.
I love the idea of how a question can change your life, prompt you to do better, serve others, become more Christlike. And I love how Wilcox and Hilton have delved into the questions of The Book of Mormon and how those questions really can change our lives.

Ready for a change in your life? Turn to the Book of Mormon! Popular authors Brad Wilcox and John Hilton III help us recognize and ponder 52 powerful Book of Mormon questions which can help us with the challenges in life. Could a simple question change your perspective?
·         How is it that ye have forgotten?
·         Have ye inquired of the Lord?
·         Lord, how long?
·         Have ye spiritually been born of God?
·         Know ye not that ye are in the hands of God?
·         Have miracles ceased?
·         Lord, how is it done?

One short chapter each week can inspire you in life-changing ways. Just imagine how much better your life could be one year from now!
