Resolutions or Revolutions?

So January with all of it's New Year's fanfare, shoot-for-the-moon resolutions, and starry-eyed promises is drawing to a close. Many people will leave this month and any hope for change behind when the groundhog peeks from his hole.

This year, I'm doing things a little different. I took a lot of pressure off myself and toned down my normally huge list of goals to something simple.
My goal for 2012 is to find more JOY in the journey.
I've struggled with a lot of stress from many different sources over the past year, and lately I've been examining my life, trying to find that elusive power to change things so that I can genuinely smile. I've decided that the most important goal I could make--the most important daily choice I could make--is to find some joy each day.

A few things I'm trying to do...
Enjoy a daily devotional where I study the scriptures, thoughts, and take a few moments to ponder. This usually takes place after I get two of my kids off to school and my boys are playing trucks at my feet, but it's something that definitely brings me joy.

Enjoy my children by reveling in the moment, laughing more, hurrying less. This one is hard. Most of you can identify with the feeling that there is too much to do to sit down and really enjoy revving that hot wheels car down the hallway. I've always been good at making time to read to my kids, but after a few minutes of playing my brain would zone out and immediately begin ticking through my to-do list of all the things I needed to do to care for that child plus three more, not to mention the jobs I needed to complete for my part-time work and writing.

Enjoy sitting still. Again, this one is almost laughable, right? When does a stay-at-home mom of four kids with a house to take care of and a book to write and another job to do in her "spare time" ever get to sit still? But I am doing it, even if only for a moment. Last week, I sat on my couch and looked out the window. I watched my two girls walking home from school--singing, full of smiles, and imagination. I caught a moment that I can pull up like a snapshot in my mind and view the little moments of JOY that are all around me, if I will stop long enough to notice.

I enjoy each of you. Thank you for making my life brighter. I appreciate your comments, your wisdom, your support.

Plugged In and Back in Business

Ack! I haven't blogged for 10 days! Did you miss me? :)
I have been missing in action, lost in remodeling our home. My husband and I realized that was the correct term for ripping out 700 square feet of ugly tile and carpet, and getting the floors ready to have wood laminate installed. Here's a pic of me happy about chipping out the old tile.

And here's a picture of the real grunt work in action!

While the floors were bare, my wonderful mom came to help me paint at least half the walls upstairs and my wonderful mother-in-law tended my two boys so we could actually get it done!

I'm pretty excited about all of the changes. We're not completely done--just some finish work left, but I love my new floor and paint!

I hated my old tile. It was white with flecks that looked like dirt, so my floor always looked dirty--it was, but I don't need help to make it look that way with 4 kids running around!

The tile was also very uneven, and not installed correctly so we were either going to have to redo the grout, not to mention our ugly carpet OR
RIP IT OUT!

My walls didn't have any color, so my hubby and I remedied that by purchasing 5 different gallons of Martha Stewart paint that was on close-out from Home Depot. Here's a pic of the kitchen in action with the ugly carpet still in the hallway.

My favorite is the kitchen, which we painted in Arrowroot (kind of a green with blue tone) and Sisal (a warm cream color).

Below is a picture of my new living room with one of my favorite prints. I saw the real-life painting at the Tate Gallery in London when I went there on study abroad during college. It's called "The Lady of Shalott" by John William Waterhouse

I can't wait to move into my office which is currently the baby's room, but the baby is one so it's time for him to move in with his three-year-old brother. Crossing fingers that can happen soon!

While I was unplugged, I had a birthday, got to have my parents come for a visit from Idaho, went out with my sister-in-laws & mother-in-law, and lots more fun things. Now I'm back in business, hard at work at planning all of the book signings I'll be doing for Caller ID in March, April, and May.
I have some neat things planned for my blog, and I'm hoping the stars will align so I can get it all done and share with you.

A fellow author in my author's guild shared this quote and I just had to pass it along to you. It shows just how much power and soul a book can hold.

Tempting Toffee Crisps Recipe

Christmas candy season is over, but I wanted to share this treat with you so you can slot it for your holiday treats this year! Honestly, I could eat this all year it's so delicious. Maybe it's a good thing I only make it for Christmas.

Tempting Toffee Crisps

12 whole graham crackers
3/4 cup packed brown sugar

3/4 cup butter (do not use margarine)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate morsels
1/2 cup almonds or pecans chopped

1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Arrange graham crackers side by side in a single layer in a large cookie sheet or bar pan/jelly roll pan.

2.In small saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, and vanilla. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until mixture comes to a full boil across the surface. Continue boiling 4 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove saucepan from heat and immediately pour mixture evenly over crackers.

3. Bake 10-12 minutes or until bubbly and lightly browned. Remove pan from oven. Sprinkle with chocolate morsels. Allow chocolate to soften, then spread evenly over baked crackers with a spatula.

4. Sprinkle chopped nuts over chocolate. Cool completely. When chocolate is firm, break or cut into pieces. This is a toffee, so pieces will break into all different shapes and sizes and that's okay!

Yield: About 2 dozen pieces
A variation is to drizzle with melted white chocolate for a fancy look. Or if you used milk chocolate chips, you could drizzle with dark chocolate chips.

It's the second day of January and I haven't filled out my customary pages of goals, *gasp*! I love setting goals and I will get to it, but I've been enjoying the holidays with my family AND I just finished going through edits on the final proof of CALLER ID.

Christmas Miracles From You To Shelley Mingo

I'm so excited to report on the results of the fundraiser that so many of you made a huge success. You can read more about it here. Shelley Mingo lost her husband two years ago in a plane crash, and she works out of her home as a hairdresser to support her three young children.

On Tuesday I went to visit Shelley to surprise her with a check from the fundraiser. I set up a hair appointment with her and then met up with her sister Jenni to go over to the house. We came downstairs to see her busily working to finish up with another client. I waited for a few minutes, chatting with her brother, Ryan, who was there to help with the kids. Shelley said, "Wow, you didn't know you'd be coming to a party here."

My grin just got wider. I couldn't stop smiling and when Shelley motioned for me to sit in the salon chair, I said, "I brought you a little Christmas gift."
Then I handed Shelley a "Christmas Miracle Check" for her family. She said, "What? What is this?" and then she and I started crying. After a few minutes, she was able to read aloud the amount of $1,000.00!!!
Given with love and prayers by over 50 donors.

I briefly explained to Shelley that The Original Scrapbox had donated a prize so that we could host a fundraising giveaway on my blog. The response and outpouring of love was overwhelming and we were able to raise $1,000 to help her with whatever her family needed this Christmas.

We all had tears in our eyes and a swelling of the Christmas Spirit in our hearts.

I had a great visit with Shelley. I didn't let her do my hair--I told her it was a fake appointment so that she could take a break because she works so hard and does a fantastic job as a hairdresser.

Shelley is a great mom, so patient and loving with her three darling children, ages 6, 5, and 2. I noticed several pictures of Jordan around the house with his children, his family and again felt a keen sense of loss for Shelley and the good men who are no longer here with us. I also have great admiration for her positive attitude. She and Jordan bought their house as a fixer-upper, but he was taken too soon to do everything they planned, and so Shelley has done her best to make her home beautiful and inviting.

I want to thank each of you again for reaching out to her with donations, thoughts, and prayers. Shelley is an amazing example of someone who knows our Savior and is trying her best to raise her children to know Him. I'm so thankful that I had the opportunity to share in the glorious feeling of celebrating the true meaning of Christmas with this miracle from you to Shelley.

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas...

It's almost here! Are you ready for Christmas?

We're almost ready at the Christensen house. Lots of presents to wrap, a few last minute gifts to make and buy, and I still haven't written my Christmas letter. But I am enjoying experiencing the excitement as my kids count down the days until the holiday. It makes the holiday so magical to have little kids around. Like the Kenny Rogers' song says, "Christmas is for kids."
We have a paper chain, and advent calendar, and an advent felt tree to help count down the days, so nobody is losing track of the days around here.

My sister and I made chocolates on Saturday and it was so fun. I missed our "annual" chocolate fest last year because I had a newborn and my sister was in Texas. My husband is so excited about the boxful of candy sitting in my garage--especially the caramel, chocolate-dipped pretzels!
Here's a list of the candy we made--and I have to note that this list is paltry compared to other years. Now that I have 4 kids and a new book coming out, plus two more in revisions, this is all we had time for...

Reading in the Future

Today I'm happy to feature a guest interview on my blog. David Farland is the award winning New York Times Best-selling author of dozens of books. He's an incredible writer, speaker, and teacher and today he's sharing insight on the future of reading. I hope you enjoy his thoughts and there is a special giveaway involved with this interview--read on!

David Farland loved books as a child, particularly fantasy and science fiction. By the time he was sixteen he was secretly writing his first novel, banging away at a typewriter, studying writing texts that he bought used at a nearby college. While studying to be a writer and editor at Brigham Young University, he created his own curriculum, which was later adapted by over two hundred other schools. Meanwhile, he began winning international writing contests, which led to a multi-book contract. Those first books won awards and launched him on the bestseller lists.

In 1989, taking his first job out of college, he was hired for IBM to help develop electronic books in the future—ones that run on computers and combine music, sound-effects, art, film, and other mediums. It’s an interest that has stayed with him, and Dave had ideas that go beyond anything that is currently available.

Imagine that you put on your “reading glasses.” The glasses are dark, fitted with lasers and high-quality stereo earbuds, so that as you put them on, your entire field of vision is captured. A laser inside the glasses flashes a novel title on the interior surface of your eye—on a field of view so wide, it’s like watching a movie.

Of course, the book you see is Dave’s book (why not, it's his fantasy). The letters start small, off in the distance and they quickly draw closer to you, but they don't stop, they wash right over you and just when it seems they're all around you, they explode in a burst of light, “Nightingale, by David Farland.”

You can hardly imagine what life was like before 3D. As soon as you read the last word, a laser with a computer link that tracks your eye movement cues the background music, and images begin to flash in your eye—a holographic video-clip of the character of Bron, as an infant, being abandoned outside the door of a cheap hotel in the Utah desert. The camera pans up to the face of his mother, Sommer, bitter and broken, with tears in her eyes. We flash to the prologue, where Sommer runs through a forest at night, her breathing deep, while dogs snarl and bark as they give pursuit. Fireflies rise up around her.

Words to the novel appear on screen, as background music continues, and you begin to read. As Sommer twists her foot and falls, the lasers pace your reading and insert a sound-effect—the thud of a body falling, the hiss of breath knocked from Sommer’s throat. The dogs bay more excitedly. A man’s heavy footsteps can be heard tromping through the brush behind the reader, and a startled mewling cry escapes Sommer’s throat. . . .

Welcome to the future of reading, where text, images, sounds and music forge a collage. That’s the vision that led Dave to become a co-founder of East India Press.

The technology to do this already exists. The use of heads-up displays in fighter jets was pioneered in the 1960s, and that technology has now gone public. Though readers now are using the iPad2 and the Kindle Fire, Dave is looking forward to the devices we’ll have five years from now, or ten years.

How can reading technology be better than with current books?

“We don’t want to replace reading,” Dave says. “We don’t want to make movies. Reading often engages the audience’s imagination in ways that movies fail to. We want to keep it that way. We want the reader to be a partner with us in bringing a tale to life. At the same time, we hope to ‘enhance,’ the story, help readers become more fully involved with it, yet keep budgets reasonable. With film clips, animations, illustrations, background music, and sound effects, we can create something that fuses a lot of storytelling tools.”

Creating e-books has become cheap and easy. This year, it is estimated that three million people will be putting their own e-books up for sale. That’s a staggering number. If you spend eight hours a day just examining those titles, and spend only ten minutes studying each e-book put up this year, you wouldn’t be able to glance at even 1/1000^th of all the books that will be published—much less read one!

Readers are being deluged, often with books that aren’t any good. Most of those books, unfortunately, wouldn’t have made it past an editor. The author just wasn’t ready. Sure, there will be a few diamonds among all of that coal, but no editor will have time to sort through it.

Dave has had his share of sorting through manuscripts. For nearly a decade he was the first judge for one of the world’s largest writing contests. He tells a funny story: “Once an editor of a major publisher asked me to help pick a book to give the ‘big publicity push to’ for the next year. I read through thirty books and selected a book that the marketers thought was ‘too-long’ for its intended audience. I pointed out that the book was also written several grade levels too high for its intended audience. But it was a great book, so I urged them to push it despite the book’s apparent problems. It was called Harry Potter.”

Even though authors can publish their own works, Dave contends, “we’re going to need editors in the future who understand how to green-light a novel, who can recognize what will please an audience. But once a work is selected, the editor will take the role of a producer—assembling a creative team of composers, musicians, illustrators, animators, directors, sound-effects engineers, and so on.”

Distributing enhanced books won’t be expensive. After all, it will be done electronically. There are no copies to print, ship, or store. But creating them will be expensive and time-consuming.

Still, it will be a lot less expensive than making a movie. To create a really great movie with a lot of special effects can cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and it will only give the viewer an hour or two of entertainment. But by meshing technologies, East India Press can create a similar experience with novels, spending perhaps only a hundred thousand or two—and it will give a reading experience that might last for twenty or thirty hours or more!

Dave says of this technology, “Novels have a unique ability to let us achieve deep penetration into the minds and emotions of a character, much more so than with a film. I’m excited about the possibilities. In fact, I am so excited that I’m going indie with this next novel. I didn't have to by any means. I'm an award-winning New York Times bestseller. Instead, I decided to start my own publishing company for enhanced novels. I see potential. Nightingale is the first young adult novel I’ve written, outside of a little work with Star Wars and the Mummy. I knew it could be a hit, but I wanted to do something . . . unique with it. I've trained dozens of other #1 international bestsellers, people like Brandon Sanderson and Stephenie Meyer, and I've learned to spot “good,” whether it's someone else's work or my own. Nightingale has it.”

Now that it’s done, Dave believes, this is a first step toward creating a more-engaging form of novel, the kind that kids who are reluctant readers might devour. He’s looking forward to see what we can do in ten or twenty years. But Nightingale is a step toward that future.

Nightingale tells the story of a young man, abandoned at birth, rejected from foster home after foster home. People see that he’s brilliant and talented, but also “strange.” He’s the ultimate loner until he meets Olivia, a marvelously gifted teacher, who recognizes that Bron is something special, something that her people call a “Nightingale,” a creature not quite human.

“I was excited to see how it would be received,” Dave says. “I was even more excited when the first reviewer said, ‘I devoured the novel. It was absolutely incredible! . . . I struggled to explain just how much I enjoyed it in my review. . . . After reading Nightingale, I don't think I will even be able to go back to reading regular e-books again. Like it says in my review, reading the enhanced Nightingale felt like an ‘experience.’ It didn't feel quite like a book or a movie. It initiated all of my senses. . . . enhanced e-books are actually a real deal.’”

That's what he’d hoped people would see in it. The future of books is beginning now.

Christmas Books to Read

My pile of books to read seems to multiply by the hour! I wanted to share a few of the books on my list that I'm just starting.

Marian's Christmas Wish by Carla Kelly

Miss Marian Wynswich is a rather unconventional young lady. She plays chess, reads Greek, and is as educated as any young man. And she's certain falling in love is a ridiculous endeavor and vows never to do such a thing. But everything changes when she receives a Christmas visit from someone unexpected--- a young and handsome English lord.

If you're looking for a sweet Christmas romance, this book fits the bill. I'm only a couple chapters in, but I like the characters and the premise. Carla Kelly is a talented writer with quite a list of books to her name.

The Wise Man Returns by Kenny Kemp

Many years after the sign of the star, Melchior, one of the three wise men, returns to Judea to receive counsel from the King of the Jews. Unexpectedly finding him in the countryside teaching rather than ruling on the throne, Melchior searches for answers and finds healing in the process. A historical fiction that address contemporary concerns, this book is a balm for the wounded soul.

I've read some of Kenny Kemp's works and his writing pulls you into the stories with a unique voice and style. This promises to be a great holiday read.

A little over two years ago in August 2009, Jordan Mingo, his brother Jed, and father Ron were killed in a plane crash.

From the first pages I was hooked, as Connie reassured me that this plan was simple, but life-changing. Mining Christmas Memories

I've been enjoying the preparation for the holiday season. This is definitely a time of year that brings back so many memories. Different Christmas carols evoke feelings of home and family. Some of them make me laugh, like when I think of how my siblings and I made up funny lyrics to some of the Christmas songs. My mom would get after us and then try to hide her smile when we sang our silly songs.

Today marks the day of the beloved paper chain and countdown to Christmas. I helped my kids make a simple paper chain and it brought back memories of how each year my parents let us each make our own chain. We hung them from the china closet on cute little Christmas stocking holders and we'd get so excited to tear off each chain.

My mom said that I was always a creative child. Sometimes I was described as the 'creative child' with tongue in cheek. When I made my paper chain, it wasn't just paper rings. No, I shaped the paper like teardrops, ribbons, and whatever else I could think of to make it unique.

It's been a long time since I was a ten or twelve-year-old, but I made a little example to show you.

I remember that some people would make fun of my chain and others would admire the creativity. It didn't matter to me because it was MY Christmas chain. And that leads me to the special part of this memory. My mom and dad never discouraged me from being creative. Even when I came up with "unique" ideas that were a bit strange, they didn't criticize. They praised me for looking at things differently and for not being afraid to follow my ideas and create something new.
I'm thankful for my parents--they continue to be my biggest supporters. I love you Mom and Dad!

A New Place to Read for Free: Big World Network

One of my favorite authors, Tristi Pinkston introduced me to a fabulous new way to read and listen to books. It's a site called Big World Network and every week several authors will post part of their story in a serial form. The best part? It's all FREE!

It's described as television in book form because each week you get to read another episode in your favorite series of books.
I listened to and read the first installment of Tristi's book, called Taking out the Trash. It is delightful and I'm looking forward to more! Every Tuesday, another part of the series will be up for reading.

As many of you know, I have a problem. I always want to read way more books than I have time. My to-read stack would reach the ceiling in my house--no exaggeration! But I can burn through novellas pretty quick, so I'm adding a few more books to my list. Since these books are online, there is plenty of room for them in my to-read pile, right?

I have my eye on this series by Trina Boice as well, How to Stay Up in a Down Economy.

I have a great recommendation for anyone who enjoys reading a young adult paranormal romance.

C.K. Bryant's writing style is gripping, fresh, and realistic. Her attention to detail held me captive in Kira's world as I explored each new adventure alongside Lydia and Octavion--who is a total hottie, I might add.

Thankful Thoughts

The week of Thanksgiving brings so many happy memories to my mind. As a child, each Thanksgiving we met with extended family at my grandma's house for a big dinner. We stayed all day long, eating, visiting, eating, playing games, eating some more. I enjoyed hanging out with my cousins, reading a book, and eating yams and pumpkin pie.

Usually after the dinner was over, the female members of the clan broke out the stamping supplies and we made all kinds of darling cards and creations with scrapbook paper, ribbons, and ink. It was fun to talk and laugh as we made Christmas cards, thank you cards, and many more.

This year, my husband and I will make the candied yams--probably with some pecans! And we'll visit with his family. My kids will play with their cousins and we'll enjoy the warmth and love of family.
I'm grateful for my family--my husband's family and my own. I'm excited for this holiday season and looking forward to the happy memories we'll make.

Parmesan Crusted Chicken in Cream Sauce

I tried a new recipe for dinner last night and it was a hit. My hubby is great to help me think of ideas and he sent me the recipe, but as usual I tweaked it a bit.

Parmesan Crusted Chicken in Cream Sauce

2 c. brown rice

1 can (14 oz.) chicken broth, divided--I use water and chicken bouillon, much more economical
6 Ritz crackers, finely crushed or Panko bread crumbs. I used a combination of both.
2 Tbsp. Parmesan cheese
4 small boneless skinless chicken breast halves
2 tsp. vegetable oil
1/3 c. cream cheese

Cook rice. I use a rice cooker--love it!--using 1 1/4 c. of the broth and 1/2 c. water. Meanwhile, mix cracker crumbs and Parmesan cheese on a plate. Rinse chicken with cold water, shake off excess water. Dip chicken in cracker mixture, turning to coat.

Heat oil in a large skillet on medium heat. Add chicken; cook 8 to 10 minutes on each side or until chicken is golden brown and cooked through. Place chicken on serving plate. Set aside; keep warm. Add remaining 1/2 c. broth and cream cheese to same skillet.

Cook on medium heat until mixture just comes to a boil, stirring constantly. Simmer 3 minutes or until sauce thickens. Spoon sauce over chicken. Serve over rice.

While the chicken is cooking, steam broccoli, cauliflower, and baby carrots. Toss in melted butter and salt to taste. The veggies make a great addition to this meal.

Book Review: Not My Type by Melanie Jacobson & A Giveaway

I love reviewing books on my blog, and today I have an especially fun one to recommend and I get to give away a signed copy to one of you lucky readers!

I love this time of year when we're approaching Thanksgiving. This is the time of year when my family hauls out all of our Christmas CDs and begins celebrating our favorite Christmas carols. Snapshot from 1:30 on a Thursday Afternoon

I found this scribbled on a note paper in my desk from this past June.

I'm tending my nephew, who is also 2 years old so my sister can study for her college test, so that adds one more bum to the diaper duty circus.
I've already heated up my lunch twice at this point, so I'm thinking, "What's the point? Maybe I'll just pull out the Oreo's and some peanut butter!"

I was thinking that if I hadn't found that scrap of writing, the memory of that moment would have vanished. It's not the most important memory, but it makes me think about how much of our life is highlighted in our memories. We tend to filter through things and only remember the stand-out moments on the far sides of the spectrum of good or bad. I want to hold onto the little moments too. I want to remember that day in June when I felt frazzled, but I made it through. The boys were happy, they said and did silly things but those moments are so fleeting.
Just like how I had completely forgotten that when my first son was one-year-old, he used to grab anything he could find and throw it through the banister down the stairs. He would throw the girls' toys, shoes, my decorations, anything.

What made me remember his antics?
Watching my second little boy who is now one-year-old do the exact same thing.

I'm pretty sure I wrote something down about that, but I haven't reviewed the baby book so it is still in the faded part of my memory. But now that I've written about it again and brought the two separate memories to mind, I have a better chance of remembering...for a time.

Book Review Revisit: The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

I love reading to my kids each night. Now that we have four munchkins, my hubby reads to the boys and I read to the girls each night for about twenty minutes. My girls, age 8 and 6, always beg for more, and lately they say, "Just one more page, please!"

We've been reading chapter books and I went downstairs to my bookshelf to find another book to read. I saw one of my favorite books and was delighted because in 2008, when I first read this book, I didn't think my kids were old enough to grasp everything yet. Well, they are the perfect age now.

Through every chapter of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo, they gasped, they sighed, they expressed anger and heartbreak at Edward's journey and begged for just one more page each night.

I love this extraordinary book about a china rabbit who learns what it is to love and be loved as he travels through life. This book is for boys, and girls, and adults, and everyone. Read this book.
The text is vivid and the story is unique. There is also a selection of detailed color illustrations throughout the book that make it even more inviting to younger readers.

Happy Halloween!

My kids are so excited for Halloween this year.

My 8 year-old wanted to be a vampire and she definitely got into the scary part. She wanted blood dripping down her chin, etc. I had to improvise a little and throw in some sparkly over her white face-paint because everyone knows (since Twilight) that vampires are sparkly. I even put some red food coloring in a little water bottle for her to take to school so she could drink some blood--her idea!

My 6 year-old wanted to be a princess, but she's very particular about clothes. It worked out well for me this time because it was easy. We put on a cute 'twirly' dress and a crown with some make-up, and cute princess is ready!

The 3 year-old didn't want to be anything...here's my hubby's idea for a costume for him

So he didn't want to be anything until he started listening to The Lion King on Disney audiotapes and he decided that the lion costume Grandma picked up for him last year would be great!
ROAR!

Baby who is now one is pretty easy to please. We went for something warm and the cozy hand-me-down pumpkin sleeper with hat and booties was perfect. Even if it was a bit on the small side!

All of these pictures are from our annual Grandma Halloween party! So much fun!
The kids bobbed for apples and ate donuts hanging from strings, sugar cookies, and of course delicious homemade soups.

I love it because it's kind of a practice session for Mom to make sure we have all the goods for the costumes we need and that every kid is happy.
What am I for Halloween? Depends who you ask, LOL!

I guess I'll just be Mom today, though I am hoping to find time to put on my writer hat too!

Teaching Children Proper Phone Etiquette

I hurried up the stairs with a laundry basket to answer the ringing phone.

“Hello?”

“Who’s this?” a child’s voice asks.

This is just one of the most annoying examples of how kids talk on the phone and I can forgive it because they haven’t yet perfected their phone etiquette. I wish I could say that this had only happened when a child called, unfortunately it’s happened many times with grownups.

So when do we teach phone etiquette? As soon as your children are making phone calls. For my kids that is around age five. Before then, they talk on the phone, but I don’t let them answer or make calls until they are able to do so respectfully.

Why is it important to teach our children? Think of how many jobs utilize the phone and how important it is for business people to be professional on the phone. If your children learn correctly at a young age, they won’t have to re-learn or break bad habits when they enter the workforce.

Teaching Children Phone Etiquette:

If you are calling, identify yourself. This is Gracie, is Kelli there? Or “May I talk to Kelli?” Never give a lesson to a child or an adult in grammar by being rude. If someone asks, “Can I talk to Kelli?” You don’t say, “I don’t know, can you?” Just as you shouldn’t be superior when someone asks “Is Kelli there?” and you respond, “Yes.” And then make them ask if they can talk to them. We definitely know they aren’t calling to check if the person is there.

May I ask who’s calling?

If your child answers the phone and someone, especially an adult says, “Who’s this?” The child needs to respond, “May I ask who’s calling?” I’ve told my kids if it’s one of their friends, I don’t mind if they say, “This is Sophie.” But an adult should never ask who they are before identifying themselves. Likewise, my children don’t need to give out information about whether I’m busy or gone to an adult if they don’t know who it is.

Take a message

Don’t give out personal information. My mom is in the shower, my dad isn’t here. You can say, “She isn’t available right now.” Or “She’s busy right now, can I take a message?”

Speak in a clear voice, don’t mumble.

Teach your kids how to hold the phone correctly so that they are speaking into the mouthpiece and also holding it by their ear so they can hear properly. Teach them to speak clearly and not mumble as it is difficult to hear. Also give them pointers about what they can do if it gets too loud while they are trying to talk. Go to another room and shut the door, etc. I’ve noticed that my kids have a really difficult time concentrating on their phone conversation if there is any background noise. I think this is because they haven’t learned to tune it out yet, but it will help to ease frustration if you teach them this concept.

Don’t speak too loud

Don’t yell for someone when they’re wanted on the phone (unless you cover the receiver or mute the phone.) This sound is amplified and hurts the person’s ears. Teach your children that it’s better to go and hand the person the phone. In cases where Mom or Dad are too far away, take a message. Also, don’t speak too loud or yell into the phone during a conversation. If they can’t hear, they can ask politely, “Can you please speak louder. I can’t hear you.”

Parents Set the Example

As parents, we can set the example of how to talk on the phone. Children learn by watching and they only have to see something once to mimic it.

I have a high-pitched voice so many times when people call, they ask, “Is your mom there?” Politely, I say, “This is the mom,” or I’ll say “This is Rachelle.” It’s an honest mistake and one that will sometimes happen to kids in reverse, even little boys. What I mean is that sometimes kids will answer the phone and the person might say, “Hi, Rachelle.” Instruct your child that if this happens, don’t be upset. Sometimes there is background noise that makes it hard for the person to hear properly and they can’t recognize the voice. Have your child respond, “No, this is Daniel, but I can get my mom if you’d like.”

Recently I was helping my six-year-old call to invite a friend over and I made this mistake. My baby was crying and when the person answered I couldn’t hear very well, so I just asked, “Is your mom or dad there?”

The person responded. “Uh, no they’re not.” And by that time I realized that it was the husband who had answered the phone. He was totally serious about saying that his parents weren’t there and didn’t say anything else even when there was an uncomfortable pause. I was unsure of how to continue, so I said, “Well, I was calling to see if Emily could come and play with Sally.”

“Oh, all right. Let me check,” he responded.

I was embarrassed that I had made the mistake, but what he did was extremely rude and juvenile. So I made sure to let him know that this same type of thing happens to me at least once a week and I am never rude to the caller. He apologized and I hope learned an important lesson especially since his behavior was being modeled in front of his family.

So back to the initial call I took where the child asked me, “Who’s this?”

How do I respond? I usually say, “This is Rachelle. Who is this?” But if a child calls repeatedly and says that, I will say, “Who is this?” in a kind voice. I’m not going to try to teach them proper phone etiquette, but by example will be polite and draw attention to the fact that they haven’t identified themselves.

If you haven’t taken the time to teach your children proper phone etiquette or if you hear them being disrespectful, it may be a good idea to make a rule: You may not answer the phone until you have learned to do so correctly.

I hope these tips help encourage your children to speak on the phone politely through adolescence and into adulthood.

Liz's Thought:

In the mid-1970s I taught school in a remote hamlet in Pacific Northwest timber country. Many of my students were grandchildren of people who had immigrated to Washington from the woods of North Carolina in the early decades of the twentieth century. They had no TV reception and little other outside influence to dilute the customs and speech patterns they had brought with them.

I went in feeling sorry for these children, sure that they were disadvantaged. I was appalled when I discovered that few of my students knew what Camelot was, and I embarked upon a broadening campaign, trying to stuff them full of all I felt they had missed. And then one day, I asked if anyone knew where to find morel mushrooms. Hands went up all around, and one boy, who up to that time had been reticent in class, opened up and told me not only about morel mushrooms, but about several other kinds. I still remember the look on his face as he let me into his world.

I realized at that moment that these kids weren’t deprived. They were just enriched in different areas. I was comfortable with books; they were at home in the woods. I’ve tried to remember that as I’ve met people with different backgrounds. We’re all rich, just in different ways.

I used that experience in my latest book, Cold River. Set in contemporary times, it’s about someone who takes over leadership of a school system in remote timber country in the Pacific Northwest. She has to learn the same lesson I did.

Random Learning Moments

Here's a few things I've learned today.

You know when water is not cold, but kind of warm as in lukewarm? I learned lukewarm is one word. I pride myself on my spelling, but somehow that one got past me, ha, ha.

Electronics from the stone-age are still fun. My three-year-old son has been listening to the old Disney audiotapes I listened to as a child. Yes, my mom took very good care of things, we even have the books to go with the tapes. The only problem is every time it plays the little chime to turn a page, he says, "Mom, turn the page, turn the page!" His favorite is The Fox and the Hound with the big grizzly bear attack scene.

I need more than 4 1/2 hours of sleep. Okay, I already knew that one, but for some reason my baby thinks it is his duty to keep reminding me of that lesson.

When I'm feeling a tad overwhelmed by the demands of my kids and life in general, a hug from a little one-year-old who pats my back softly is just what the doctor ordered.

Prepping for NaNoWriMo

NaNo...what? If you haven't heard about NaNoWriMo, I'm excited to tell you about it.
National Novel Writing Month takes place each year in November. Writers from all over the planet set a goal to write like crazy. In order to "win" Nano, you need to write 50,000 words in 30 days.

To give you an idea of what that means, a typical novel is around 80,000-100,000 words. My first novel, WRONG NUMBER is 72,000 words and my upcoming novel, CALLER ID is about 83,000 words.
Last year I participated in Nano for the first time and I won--something that completely amazed me because my baby was only two weeks old when NaNo started on the first of November.

This year I'll be participating again, you can too, just follow this link to sign up.
I just signed up again, but my hope is that I won't have 50K words left on my new novel. I've been challenging myself to a personal NaNoWriMo during the month of October and I just hit 33,000 words on my latest mystery/suspense novel. It's pretty exciting to see those words pile up. I'm kind of competitive--even with myself--so I have an Excel document in which I track the amount of words I write each day.

Some nights I'm so tired and I really want to veg, but then I'll look at my word count which I've worked at in snatches all day between changing diapers, helping with homework, helping my girls practice piano, making dinner--you get the idea. Often I'll think, I'm only 800 words away from hitting 2,000, which is my daily goal. Sometimes I make it and other times I don't. I don't write on Sundays, so that means I have to up my daily word count goal to reach the monthly goal. But every day I'm more motivated to write because I'm pushing toward that goal.

If you're a writer, I encourage you to sign up for NaNo and make a goal.
If you're not a writer, focus on what you do want to accomplish in another area of your life, make a goal, and make it happen.

Angela's Thought to share:

I heard Wendy Lamb, Ann Cannon's editor for Charlotte's Rose, speak at a conference where she said, “I keep finding books that deal with teenagers and faith” and would like to see more. This was the first time I thought it was possible for me to “write what I know” and have an audience outside my religious community.

When I was trying to do this with TAKEN BY STORM and making an awful mess of it, I turned to Katherine Paterson’s work--artistic and critical--for advice. Katherine has always been public about her faith and is not shy about discussing how it impacts her work. I learned so much from her, and now that she’s the U.S. Ambassador of Children’s Literature, I’m excited to share a taste of her wisdom with you.

In an article for U.S. Catholic, April 2001, entitled, “The Spiritual Reading Life of Children,” Katherine Paterson said,

"If we set out to teach a moral or a spiritual truth, we are writing propaganda, not a story. There is nothing wrong with good propaganda . . . but we shouldn’t confuse this effort with fiction, even if we try to cloak it in story form. We know ahead of time what the answers are, and we write to persuade the reader."

This advice was key for me. I learned to eradicate statements like, "I'm writing this book for . . . " or "The theme of my book is . . . " and replace them with story questions, "What if . . . ," "What would happen next . . . ," and "Then, what would she do?"

Paterson also writes the most beautiful, inspiring, encouragement. Here's a taste. You can find more of the wisdom I gleaned from her on my liv2writ blog at www.angela-morrison.com. This quote is from, "The Journey Inward," The Writer, August 1995.

"Are you afraid that deep down inside you are really shallow? That when you take that dark voyage deep within yourself, you will find no treasure to share? Trust me. There is. Don’t let your fear stop you. . . . Like a child, pour out what is inside you, not listening to anything but the stream of life within you."

Paterson's book, The Invisible Child: on Reading and Writing Books for Children is also an incredible resource for any writer.

I’m a mom of three great kids. I have two boys, ages 6 and 5 and a little girl, who is 2. I’ve been married for 11 years and we love living in Utah. I grew up in Emery County and I feel very blessed for the memories I have. I love the desert and mountains, and I’ve been interested in everything from archeology to paleontology…and I could go on and on. Really, I just love the outdoors. One of my favorite hobbies is collecting and searching for fossils in the desert and surrounding areas. I also grew up frequenting museums and accompanying my parents on archeological digs in the San Rafael, and I love to incorporate my hobbies and interests into my writing. I love spending time with my husband and children and we spend most weekends rock hounding or exploring new places as a family.

Who are some of your favorite authors and how have they influenced your writing?

I have several favorites, but the two authors who have influenced my writing the most, are Dorothy Keddington and Jennie Hansen. I discovered their novels when I was a young woman. While wandering aimlessly through my local library one afternoon, I happened to stumble across Return to Red Castle and Run Away Home. I checked both books out and I read into the night and throughout the next day. I couldn’t put either book down. It was at that point I knew what I wanted to write. I loved suspense.

What is your favorite part of being an author?

My favorite thing about writing is being able to create my own adventure. I was a tom-boy and as a child I craved adventure. I explored exotic countries and conquered high mountain peaks all from the comfort of my own back yard. I had a very vivid imagination and that love of creativity followed me into adulthood. I have so much fun when I am able to sit down and pound out the ideas floating around in my head, and I enjoy writing the type of stories that I love to read.

Do you have another book in the works? Can you tell us a little about it?

I have three manuscripts that are nearly complete. I am currently in the process of editing a crime thriller that takes place in Seattle, Washington. Tarrin Grace has just come through a very difficult divorce, and just when things are beginning to look up, her young daughter, Lexie, is witness to a heinous murder. Suffering from a form of post-traumatic stress disorder, Lexie is unable to recall details of the crime or the murderer. However, the killer remembers her, and Tarrin must risk all she has to protect her family.

One Minute Chocolate Frosting Recipe

I found this recipe on CDKitchen.com and it was so incredibly easy to make and delicious too! I needed a quick chocolate icing to frost my one-year-old's football cake and this worked great.

I think I'll use it to ice brownies next. Yum!

1 Minute Chocolate Frosting Recipe

Makes 1 1/2 Cups

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

PREPARATION:

Mix together. Bring to a boil and boil for 1 minute. Add vanilla. Cool partially, then beat with a mixer for 3 minutes or until spreadable consistency.

Baby Turns One

We had so much fun celebrating Austin's first birthday. I can't believe how fast the year has gone by. It's been pretty tough with number four so close to number three. He's a good-natured baby but we've had a terrible time getting him to sleep through the night. We've been working on it for months and he's finally figured it out in time for his birthday. And he's walking!!
It's so neat watching him toddle around.

I made him a little football cake with chocolate frosting. (I'll post the recipe next--it's one minute frosting!)

Both of my boys devoured their first cakes. Check out this play by play.

He looked at the cake for about two minutes and then....

Boy that was good and big brother kept trying to help him eat it!

I feel already that I've made many mistakes as a writer, both in writing my books and in promoting them. What I think really counts, however, is what I choose to do after I've realized my mistake. Mining Your Memories

I'd like to start featuring something a little more on my blog. It's a little exercise called Mining Your Memories. I took a class on this topic when I attended the Highlights Conference in Chautauqua, New York last year. Kim Griswell taught the class and I loved it because she highlighted how we can take some of our most poignant memories and weave them into our writing.
It's almost like keeping a journal, but you do so descriptively, powerfully so that you can experience the emotion again. Smell that aroma, see the color of your favorite jacket, hear the crunch of dried pumpkin vines underfoot during the yearly stroll of the pumpkin patch.

It's amazing how our memories are tied to small triggers. I'll give you an example.

I was sitting in church next to my eight-year-old daughter and we were singing a hymn. The hymnbook was open on my lap and my finger was running along the bottom of each word so that my daughter could sing along. Suddenly I could see myself sitting in church next to my own mother. I remembered her small fingers with her rounded nails pointing to the words of the hymn so that I could learn to sing along.
I thought about the many times I sang with my mother at home, at church, and how much we loved to sing. I think it's amazing that through the trigger I could pull up a memory twenty-five years ago of my mom's index finger pointing at the words of hymns that I now have memorized.
The emotion connected to it was powerful and made me wish my mom was closer so I could just give her a big hug. The memory gave me a reminder of how much I love my mom and enjoyed sitting next to her in church singing along to the deep tones of the organ and learning the words of hymns that I now have memorized.

Do you see how one small moment can evoke so many bits of information recall in our brain?

These memory exercises enrich our lives because it helps us to remember and relive the good moments of the past.

Review: Minor Adjustments by Rachael Renee Anderson

Today I'm reviewing a novel by the talented Rachael Renee Anderson. In Minor Adjustments she takes us Down Under for a family drama/love story that will have you engrossed in her great storytelling style and maybe wishing for a trip to Australia.

Here's a blurb about the book:

Chicago businessman and bachelor Devon Pierce doesn't want to be appointed guardian of Australian four-year-old Ryan Caldwell - but Ryan's solicitor, Stella Walker, won't take no for an answer. I'll admit that a straight romance is usually not on the top of my to-read pile because I like a little meat with my story. This is exactly the reason I enjoyed Minor Adjustments. Rachael develops her characters well with physical and emotional details that have them walking off the page. Her interactions with the cute, four-year-old Ryan were realistic and fun. I could tell she had definitely done her homework when it came to setting part of the story in Australia. I loved reading and learning little tidbits and nuances about the country and character of the people there. And the plot line was well-developed with some surprises that kept me thinking about this book and how things would turn out for Devon, Ryan, and Stella.
Minor Adjustments
is sure to please with its clever dialogue and intriguing characters.

Gearing up for the Utah RWA Conference

The leaves are changing in the mountains of Utah and I'm getting excited about attending the Utah Romance Writers of America Heart of the West Conference this Friday and Saturday. It will be held in Park City and I'm looking forward to the beautiful drive through Provo Canyon.

There will be editors, agents, and special guest authors in attendance to teach classes on several different topics. I'll be teaching a class on "Creating Page Turners with the Elements of Suspense" on Saturday afternoon.

Apple Popover Pancakes

I love German Pancakes and this recipe is a twist on an old favorite. The presentation is beautiful and it tastes as good as it looks!

4 Eggs
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup milk
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 cup butter
2 apples thinly sliced
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Heat oven to 400 degrees, put pan in oven to heat up.
Beat eggs, flour, salt, milk together for one minute. Remove pan from oven and put butter in pan.

Line your pan with sliced apples

Pour the batter over the apple slices and sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar.

Bake in 400 degree oven. Bake until golden, puffed, about 20-25 minutes.

Serve and watch it disappear quick!

Logitech Wireless Wave MK 550 Keyboard--I think I'm in love!

I am so excited for you to meet the newest member of my desktop computer family.
The Logitech Wireless Wave MK 550 Keyboard and Mouse Combo.

I'm not getting any kind of special treatment from the company for telling you about this, so why take the time to tell you? Because I'm in love.
Yep. I admit it! Sorry, plain old-school style keyboard, I've moved on.
For the past several weeks, I've been dealing with tendonitis in my right hand, severe enough that I had to wear a wrist brace. I attributed it to several factors: my 25 pound 11 month old baby, practicing the piano a lot more than I have in the past three years or so, and typing on a crappy keyboard because I couldn't decide whether to take the plunge and buy a nice one.

I am so happy I finally decided to do it. It helped that my brother sent me an alert that the price had dropped on Amazon and that I had a $25 gift certificate to said store that needed to be spent. :)
I am a very happy girl typing on my new Logitech Wireless Wave Combo Mk550 With Keyboard and Laser Mouse (920-002555) right now. The keyboard has a slight ergonomic wave to it that I adjusted to without even noticing the difference. The hand rest is firm, yet comfortable and built into the keyboard. And can I just say that this keyboard is totally pimped out! There are so many different programmable function keys that I haven't even used them all yet.

A few of my favorites:
I love that there is a button with a camera on it and I can program it to open up my pictures with one click.
There's also a button with music notes. With a push of that button, my iTunes open up ready to go.

Using the Fn key plus any of the F keys numbered from 1-12 will open up a different feature. For example, I programmed the "W" for the Word program on the F1 key to open up my current work in progress. The F2 key has an X for Excel and it is programmed to open up my spreadsheet so that I can track my word count progress for my current WIP. Yep, I'm a nerd, but I don't care, that's how excited I am about this keyboard.

I love typing on this keyboard. The buttons have just enough give, aren't too "clicky" and I feel like I can type even faster than before.

The mouse is great. It's the first time, I've had a mouse with the forward and back buttons for web-surfing on the side--soooo handy!

If you've been wishy-washy in the past about updating your keyboard and mouse, I would suggest taking the plunge and getting the Logitech Wireless Wave MK 550 Keyboard and Mouse combo. I think you'll love it.

Lunchbox Napkins Tutorial

Two of my four children are now in school all day and that means lots of lunches, especially for my one who is a selective eater, to put it nicely.
I thought it would be fun to make some napkins for my girls.
I ran over to JoAnn's fabric and picked up 1/4 yard each of three different cotton fabrics. This was enough fabric to make six napkins and have a little bit of fabric left over.

Then I decided on the size of napkin I wanted, about 8 x 8 inches, and began cutting. You can do a larger napkin if you like, but this size is perfect for kids.

I cut each square 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" to allow for seams.

Then I put two squares right sides together.

I picked a plain Jane thread to stitch right sides together and then additional thread for top-stitching that would coordinate, but also stand out as an accent.

Start in the middle of your square and stitch around all sides, stopping about three inches before you meet up with your starting point. This leaves a hole to turn the napkin and it's handy because then the hole isn't on the corner.

Press the napkins after you turn. I hate to iron, but I'm telling you, you can't skip this step. Iron our the seams flat and tight and then get ready to top-stitch.

No need to hand stitch the hole closed! Just top-stitch around the entire napkin with your cute accent thread and Voila! your napkin is finished and the turning hole is stitched neatly shut.

My girls were excited about their napkins. They were a little concerned about getting them dirty, until I explained to them that these are napkins we'll use again and again. Just throw them in the laundry when you unpack your lunchbox.

I told them, Every time you use your napkin, you can think, "My mom loves me!"

I'm excited to review another fantastic book from Tristi Pinkston today.
Hang 'Em High is a great mystery full of head-scratching clues and quick-witted humor. I'm still smiling about a reference to mail-order monkeys and if you want to know why, you'll just have to read the book!

I Feel Like Writing

I walked a long road paved with rejections, self-doubt, and hard work before my first novel was published last year. So Saturday night when that novel won a special award, I was excited and in wonder. Did they just call my name?
Yes!

My husband Steve, and I, along with our baby Austin attended the League of Utah Writers Awards banquet and I won this beautiful award for my book WRONG NUMBER.

It is the Olive Woolley Burt Award for Outstanding Book of the Year. WRONG NUMBER was also awarded a first prize Golden Quill award in adult fiction.

The best part was that my husband was there to cheer for me, which is something he's really good at from the sidelines of my computer at home. He has always been my biggest fan and source of encouragement. He gets me and my dream. I love you Steve.

Baby Austin was pretty excited as well!

So, I feel like writing today and I'm going to sweep away the worry and self-doubt and type as fast as I can on my new novel. And when the next rejection comes in or I'm not sure how my character will overcome her latest problem, I'm going to stare at that award and then keep writing!

I want you to do the same--get rid of those negative worries that are keeping you from reaching for your dream and go for it!

is an excellent read that will have you examining the way you think and remember every day.

Joshua Foer is a talented journalist who started out investigating the United States Memory Championship and these incredibly talented people who could memorize a deck of cards in two minutes, recall the names of dozens of strangers after seeing their picture briefly, and recite a poem from memory after studying it for thirty minutes. Through the process he learned that everyone can improve their memory. Foer ended up winning the National Memory Championship and this book details his journey along the way.

I graduated in psychology, so I studied the method of loci in college, but I had forgotten how loci and the memory palace combined with the art of association can help facts stick in your brain permanently or at least as long as you need them.
I enjoyed the way Foer analyzed and debunked several different memory myths and emphasized the power in all of our brains, from chess grand masters to Japanese chick sexers.

If this is piquing your interest, which it should, I'd recommend getting a copy of Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything and devouring the many different concepts that Foer covers.

One of the things I took away from this book is to recognize how amazing our memory is and that by exercising it we can actually slow life down because as we remember more it is less of a blur. Think of it--how much work does it take you to remember ten special moments from last year?
Don't those memories make you smile? Wouldn't you like to recall more of them and reminisce on the laughter, tastes, aromas, and other sensations involved with those memories?

Foer writes with humor and intelligence and this book is filled with numerous ways in which you can improve your memory but also it's an entertaining read through Foer's viewpoint as a journalist who was willing to ask the right questions.

I'm constantly trying to improve my memory for names and faces. I think practicing has made me pretty good at remembering people's names and with a few new techniques my recall is even better.

My Anniversary is 9/11

Today my husband and I are celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary. Our lives are full of so much joy with our four beautiful children, good jobs, comfortable home, and loving family. On our 3rd anniversary, the way we celebrated was forever changed. When the twin towers fell, it created a stark reminder of how precious life is and how quickly it can change.

I enjoy reading Rachelle Gardner's blog (she has a great name!) and she posted asking readers to share their feelings about 9/11/2001.
Here is my comment:

It was my 3rd wedding anniversary. My husband called me from work and told me to turn on the TV. I saw the second tower fall. Even though the media has removed so many of those images, they can never erase the pictures in my mind of the firefighters running, crying, dying in the streets.

Each year we celebrate our anniversary–a day that changed our lives forever–and reflect on 9/11–a day that changed the world forever.

*I'm thankful for my family and I pray that those who suffered loss that day will feel peace today.

A Stitch From My Memory

The other night after I tucked my girls into bed and sang to them, I walked down the hall and sat at my sewing machine to finish up a fun project (which I'll be posting shortly). In between the whirs of the sewing machine, I could hear my girls whispering. One of them said, "I hear Mom sewing."
It brought back a flood of memories and warm feelings.

I remembered sleeping in our basement with my door cracked open just a bit and my mom working late into the night sewing on her trusty Bernina. My mom is an excellent seamstress and she taught me how to sew pretty well, but sometimes those clothing patterns still make me go cross-eyed! Not Mom, she can whip up a pair of shorts, patch a pair of pants, sew a prom dress, or make a Halloween costume with seemingly little effort.

The sound of her sewing machine was comforting to me--the needle clicking up and down past my bedtime and into my dreams meant my mother loved me. Falling asleep to the sound of her working on another project when she was most certainly bone tired from a full day's work and then another day's work when she arrived home--farming with my dad and raising kids--was evidence of how important we were to Mom. The sewing machine making tiny, even stitches across baby blankets and knit dresses was like a lullaby in itself that sent me to sleep with a reassurance that mom was there.

I finished up my project and my sweet girls were sound asleep. As I clicked off the light on my sewing machine I thought about how lucky I am. My mother took the time to teach me how to sew and I enjoy it, but the most important thing she taught me with every spool of thread spinning into the night was the depth of her love for her family.
I love you Mom. Thank you!

Have you read The Help by Kathryn Stockett?

If not, I can't recommend this book highly enough. I loved it! It's a powerful novel based on events during the Civil Rights era in Jackson, Mississippi.
I kept thinking about this book for weeks after I read it. The point of view of the characters is written wonderfully. Through their eyes we learn their personal stories and also historical events in the early 1960s.

Have you seen the movie? What did you think? I was worried about how they would be able to condense all of the wonderful stories and information from the book into a film.

I just saw the movie and I really enjoyed it. I thought they did a good job of portraying the novel and the actors were great. In the book, Minnie was a spitfire and I was excited to see how the actress did. I'm happy to say that she did great and kept me laughing. The movie was a reminder of how powerful the book was. The Help tugged at my heartstrings, made me gasp in disbelief at some of the germs that make up the human race, and then made me cry with how beautiful some humans can be if they choose to look outside themselves.

I loved the voice of Aibileen as I'm sure most do, but I loved her particularly because she understood one thing that was most important--children are God's ultimate gift to us and should be treated as such. I loved reading about her kindness and how hard she worked to help little Mae Mobley understand that she was a good and kind girl.

I love novels like "The Help" that encourage me to think hard about this world we live in, the history of our nation, and how far we've come in just a few decades.

Labor Day Celebrations

Today is a fun day for my family because it's a tradition to celebrate with my husband's family by going to the parade. Then we have dinner at his parent's house after with all the grandkids running wild through the house.
The weather for the parade was perfect--a bit overcast and not too hot.
The kids had fun on the carnival rides.

They cheered when they caught candy from the parade (and one cried cuz she didn't get enough).
We put our hand on our heart when the flag passed by and applauded the veterans of war parading in their army jeeps.
We clapped for the dancers and the bands, waved at the beauty queens and Smoky the Bear. And I remembered the many parades I attended as a child and thought how grateful I am to be part of this family tradition, making memories with my own children.
Now we're enjoying the afternoon, the last few hours of relaxation before life goes back to normal.

When I'm working on a novel, there are so many things to research. I love using Google to answer my questions. It's amazing how many small and big details go into building a setting and fleshing out characters for a book. I love it when the author takes time to portray things accurately and with a good eye for detail.
